What was your first car?

You know what's so funny about you doing this with me? It's that I only started driving three years ago, so I can remember. It was a little orange 1988 hatchback Laser, automatic, obviously, because you don't want to be getting anything as complicated as a manual. I think it cost me $3000. I drove it for seven months and then a woman ran a red light and crashed into me. When I went to look at it at the wreckers it was a write-off and I burst into tears. It was devastating. I loved that car.

What are you driving now?

After that I upgraded to a 1989 Toyota Corolla hatchback, because all the mechanics I spoke to said they never die. It's kind of heavy to drive and I like that. It's like cooking with a blunt knife. You know when you cook with a sharp knife you have to be very careful? When you cook with a blunt one you can get a bit rough.

What's your ideal car?

Because I've caught public transport my entire life, the best thing about a car is that it's a walking handbag. For me, I would upgrade to a Kombi or a motorhome, so you could make a coffee wherever you are on the side of the road, get back in and drive off.

Have you been driving long enough to develop a pet road peeve?

Texting while driving. I hate it. You'll be behind a car thinking, "You're not eating, you're not listening to the radio, you're probably not even talking on the phone. I bet you're texting." And they slow down and you overtake and sure enough, they are. It drives me berserk. -- OWEN THOMSON
