Car Immobilisers

Car immobilisers are usually fitted as part of a car alarm system and are designed to immobilise the engine and prevent vehicle theft. A car immobiliser can be an extremely effective tool to thwart car thieves, and a good-quality car alarm system will often come with an engine immobiliser. Car immobilisers can often save you further money on your insurance, even if you already have an alarm system.

Car immobilisers come in different levels of quality and may operate in different ways. We have examined some common car immobilisers that are generally well known for their quality.

Key Touch Car Immobilisers

These require a key to be inserted to disarm the car immobilisers. The system will normally arm once you switch off the ignition, and a good key touch immobiliser will automatically immobilise the engine if any electrical wires are cut.

Transponder Tag Immobilisers

These communicate with a virtually tamper proof wiring loom that functions with your car's ignition. Car immobilisers like this need to be close enough to the transponder unit to deactivate the immobiliser, and are statistically highly successful in stopping car thieves.

Remote Car Immobiliser

As the name suggests, these car immobilisers can be activated from a distance with a remote, and can also be linked with other elements such as car alarms and central locking. These are quite popular and use a similar wiring system to other car immobilisers to prevent tampering and stop your car in the event of a theft

While this list is by no means exhaustive, it does give you an idea of the protection you can supply to your vehicle. The statistics show that a car is stolen in Australia every six minutes, and often, it's the everyday vehicles that are being pilfered and not high-end luxury models that you might expect. Protect your car from thieves with car immobilisers.
