How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I have always enjoyed fixing things, since i first pulled the wheel off of dads wheel barrow. So i guess it was just a natural progression and i enjoy the challenges presented by some vehicles.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

Accepted Answer

We had a good customer of ours ring from the central coast of NSW. His family had just enjoyed an icecream on the road trip to Queensland. The luggage was packed to the roof and the kids were looking forward to SeaWorld. The vehicle would not move and the owner suspected the clutch. By making a simple phone call we figured out that the 4wd lever had been knocked into neutral by a handbag strap - PROBLEM SOLVED BY A SIMPLE PHONE CALL!

What do you like most about your job?

I'm a born and bred mechanic. I've restored 2 cars from the seventies and enjoy driving the "Oldies". Repairing vehicles and nutting out the cause the vehicle stopped in the first place gives a great deal of satisfaction.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

Check credentials, check history of business and experience of staff members. While price is very important keep in mind the old adage "You only get what you paid for" and finally try to take you car to a company that is Australian owned and run by people who care. Most people visit a mechanic only twice a year don't be afraid to travel to a trusted one.

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

Customers often ask questions they themselves have been asked. For instance a customer has been told by a friend that they require spark plugs because the car runs badly. Quotation and replacement spark plugs may not rectify the fault on and modern day electronic managed vehicle. Our quote for spark plugs may not be the cheapest and therefore we do not get the work. Result:-unhappy customer, unfixed vehicle and customer with egg on there face. Call and explain the fault, allow us to do the diagnosis and then we can give you an estimate.

We have been established since the 70"s providing quality service to the Camberwell, Glen Iris, Ashburton, Burwood areas. Our workshop in Hartwell stood as a landmark workshop since the 1930's. What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Vehicles these days are becoming more specific. Quotes will often require vehicle identification numbers and also run on various service schedules. We suggest allowing us to view the vehicle and even "Second opinion" the vehicle so we can quote as accurately as possible.

Service your vehicle on time. Report any faults early. Maintain your vehicle's oil level and tyre pressures to improve fuel economy over the long term.

Our prices are realistic and in line with VACC expectations. We don't quote cheap prices to get you in the door only for you to find a larger amount when you pick up you vehicle at the end of the day. Our staff are qualified motor mechanics and are payed as per award rates - they are not "Factory trained techs" and don't have "off-shore" qualifications

Repairs are charged at an hourly rate as is industry standard. Approximate costs are given at the commencement of work and regular updates phoned in given as the individual job requires - WE DONT SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED DOLLARS WITH  OUT YOU KNOWING!

We like to think that we are a one-stop shop as far as if we can't carry out your required repairs in-house we can arrange or recommend trusted specialists as required. So from a simple tail light globe or broken mirror glass to something as complex as and engine management fault we've got you covered.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

All our staff are fully qualified motor mechanics. Stuart is VACC trained and a member of I.A.M.E and VACC. With on-going training in the latest advancements and awards including apprentice of the year our staff are well prepared to tackle the developments that lie ahead.
